As scientists working on environmental systems, we have front row seats at the global tragedy unfolding on the world stage. As people with passions and compassions - and families - we look for meaningful solutions. We know such solutions exist, and our mission at Biosphere Capital Limited is to deliver realistic business outcomes that solve local problems in ways that have a significant, lasting impact and can provide leadership in New Zealand and globally.
Least cost solutions
Real change only occurs if the economics support it. Biosphere Capital started in 2008 doing renewable energy projects in developing countries in Asia, where systemic issues - extreme poverty, corruption, lack of infrastructure - often got in the way of good outcomes. If there is any place on earth that can get it right it ought to be New Zealand - an OECD country with low population density, plentiful land and resources, and a skilled and educated workforce. Our aim is to bring international best practice and innovation to New Zealand.
Urban rewilding and ecosystem restoration
Most of us live in cities. Most cities consist of heavily degraded environments. We aim to provide tools and services to help land owners and authorities improve the ecology, amenity and aesthetics of urban spaces with scientifically motivated landscape design. We aim to promote the concepts of cities as biodiversity refuges and hotspots, and as evolving parklands, rather than as the deserts they tend to be now. We hope that an improved relationship with nature will result, with enhanced respect for native peoples, native ecosystems and sustainability.
